Effective communication skills

Effective communication skills

From June 30 to July 4, the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) hosted the course “Effective Communication Strategies”, which was the first in the series of Specialized Intensive Courses dedicated to complementary skills for the ENTITLE fellows.

The course focused on the art of writing for scientific and lay audiences, and presenting results to the public, including with audiovisual means. The course included a first session lead by Professor Giorgos Kallis, ENTITLE’s coordinator at ICTA-UAB, about communicating research to a scientific audience. The second day consisted of a practical session on science communication in popular media by the awarded science communicator Michele Catanzaro. Finally, on the third day the social media maker and environmental justice researcher Leah Temper joined us for a workshop on documentary filmmaking in political ecology.

The main sessions of the course were restricted to ENTITLE researchers and a small number of PhD students from outside the network. However, two very interesting public events free of charge were offered in the Barcelona city center.

Lecture by Jon Lee Anderson

The first was a talk by renowned journalist Jon Lee Anderson on the 2nd of July at the Catalan Association of Journalists. His lecture focused on his trajectory and life as a journalist specialized in conflict zones and Latin America issues and how to effectively convey complex socio-political problems to broad audiences in the written press. Lee Anderson is a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine. He has reported frequently from the world’s conflict zones like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Liberia, Syria or Somalia. He has covered countries like Ukraine, Haiti and Brazil, and has written profiles of political leaders like Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.

Before the talk Entitle fellows and Jon Lee Anderson had a private session in form of an interview that was also recorded in video for public dissemination.

Film screening of the documentary Il Segreto

The second public event was the Premiere in Spain of the recently released Italian documentary Il Segreto (2013, cyop&kaf) followed by an audience discussion, last 4th of July at RAI (Recursos d’Animació Intercultural). The film follows a group of Neapolitan children who move throughout the city in search of Christmas trees and pile up their mysterious collection in an abandoned courtyard in the Quartieri Spagnoli. This longstanding tradition also becomes a site of conflict, highlighting the political ecologies of urban spaces. The event counted with the participation of the director, who will introduced the documentary and lead the debate. The film was one of the finalists of the international prize David Di Donatello 2014.
