Concepts and Models in Ecology

Bogazici University, Istanbul Instructors: Prof. Dr. Andrzej Furman

The course intends to introduce fundamental concepts, theories and models used in ecology using the evolutionary perspective. It follows hierarchical approach to ecology; i.e. genes > individuals > populations > communities > ecosystems. The material includes such topics as mechanisms of evolution, fitness and adaptations, evolution of sex, sexual selection, kin selection, reciprocal altruism, elements of population dynamics, structure of ecosystems, biogeographic island theory, nestedness model, and conservation ecology paradigms.
