The course aims to give a comprehensive picture on the context, methods and applications of the study of resource flows through economies. The conceptual background behind social metabolism studies will be presented, linking it with the principles of ecological economics.Students will be introduced to and gain practical experience with the main tools and methods used for the accounting of material and energy flows on the local and global scale. Finally, special emphasis is put on the presentation and analysis of case studies and relevant reports, in order for students to comprehend the utility of each methodology and expose the diversity of metabolic studies in scope and scale.
